| Until the outbreak of World War II, the Grille represented the Nazi State and Chief of the Naval Staff. In May 1936, it conveyed Adolf Hitler and Admiral Erich Raeder in the fleet parade at the dedication of the Marine Memorial at Laboe. In October 1936, it transported Minister of War Field Marshal von Blomberg on an official visit to Norway. The next official use was in October 1937, transporting a Wehrmacht delegation to England for the coronation of King George VI. In June 1937, Grille served as flagship for Fleet Commander Admiral Rolf Carls in Kriegsmarine training exercises.

| In May 1936 the 'Grille' had on board Hitler and the Oberbefehlshaber der Marine, Admiral Erich Raeder, at the Naval Parade for the inauguration of the Naval Memorial in Laboe. In October, with Generalfeldmarschall Werner von Blomberg on board, the Aviso went on a trip to the North Cape. On her journey back, which began at Narvik, the 'Grille' escorted the Reichskriegsminister as he returned to Germany on a mine railway. In mid-May 1937 the Aviso took a Wehrmacht delegation to the coronation of Edward VIII in England. She visited Southampton and Spithead before returning the delegation home. In early 1937 she served as the Flaggschiff of the Flottenchef, Admiral Rolf Carls, for the exercises of the Befehlshaber der Aufklärungsstreitkräfte-Verbandes in the North Sea. In October the Generalfeldmarschall Werner von Blomberg took another journey on the ship. This time he travelled to the Atlantic and visited Funchal and Ponta Delgada in Portugal. At the Fleet Parade to mark the launch of the Schweren Kreuzers 'Prinz Eugen' on 22 Aug 1938 the 'Grille' had on board Adolf Hitler and his guest of honour, the Hungarian Regent Admiral Nikolaus Horthy de Nagybánya. Amongst other tasks at the end of 1938 the ship was used as a Zielschiff for exercises by torpedo planes of Luftwaffenstaffel 3/506. Her home port was at Kiel and was initially subordinate to the Stationskommando der Ostsee, then to the newly formed Befehlshaber der Sicherung der Ostsee.
